Minister Suspended 30 Days For Officiating Son’s Same-Sex Marriage

SPRING CITY, Pa., (CBS) – A Methodist minister has been suspended 30 days for officiating his son's same-sex wedding.

Pastor Frank Schaefer was found guilty Monday of violating the United Methodist Church law after he officiated his son's same-sex marriage in Massachusetts (See Related Story). And Tuesday night, he waited for the jury's sentencing.

"It's exhausting," Schaefer said.

Tuesday night, the jury announced his sentence of a 30-day suspension.

A district superintendent from the church said a penalty could have been as harsh as defrocking him or:

"You could be suspended and beyond that it's up to the jurors," Michele Bartlow, of United Methodist Church said.

Those that know the pastor are divided. He had a strong support system outside of where the jurors were deliberating, but some of his church members like Christina Watson believe pastors must follow the law.

"It's a tough one, but it was wrong and to not defrock him sends a message that would be hurtful in the long run," Watson said.

The pastor was asked by the church to never perform another same-sex marriage, but he said he couldn't out of love and support for his four children, three of whom are gay.

"We are proud to stand by Pastor Frank and regardless of the outcome we know this will affect many people in the LGBT community," Clydette Overton, pastoral assistant at Iona United Methodist Church said.
