Health Alert: Concussion Study

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - A new study shows the brains of people who suffer mild concussions need more time to heal even months after symptoms from the concussion have gone away.

Researchers in New Mexico used special brain scans on 50 people who suffered mild concussions.

They found that while the patients' memory and thinking improved four months later, scans showed abnormalities in the front and sides of their brains.

(CBS) - The American Heart Association says the health benefits of quitting smoking, even for people over 65, show up much faster than previously thought.

Researchers in Alabama studied more than 850 former smokers.

They found it took an average of 8 years for them to have the same risk of deadly heart attacks and strokes as people who never smoked.

Previous research said it would take 15 years for that to happen.

(CBS) - The largest study ever on the health benefits of eating nuts shows people who eat almonds, cashews, pistachios, and other tree nuts every day had a 20 percent lower death rate than those who didn't.

The study published in the New England Journal of Medicine involved almost 120,000 people.

It was paid for by the International Tree Nut Council.
