East Texans granted the gift of sight for the Holidays

NACOGDOCHES (KYTX) - The Lehman Eye Center in Nacogdoches is continuing it's 23 year long tradition of providing the gift of sight.

CBS 19's Katiera Winfrey visited the center to find out how multiple east Texans are getting free cataract removals just in time for the holidays.

Having the gift of sight, isn't always permanent.

"It got to wear I couldn't hardly see nothing," said cataract removal recipient Bobby Bennett.

Bennett had already had glaucoma in his left eye, before diabetes eventually caused cataracts to form in his eye in 2011.

"It's just blurry, like looking through a fog," he said.

The loss of sight made day to day activities like fishing, working or driving impossible, however that won't be the case for long.

"Well I live by faith and I said Lord whatever your will is," Bennett said.

The doctors are removing his cataracts -- to improve his vision.

Each year about 30 people are granted the gift of sight and many people have been waiting a long time to get their vision back. The surgery typically lasts no longer than 10 minutes.

"We're fortunate to be able to give that back to the community," said Dr. Timothy Young. He's the other doctor that will be working to provide the gift of sight. The center's head doctor Robert Lehman is the head doctor working.

"These are folks who unfortunately don't have medical insurance and also the means to pay for the care that they desperately need," Young said.

Despite the work load, Young said it's a great feeling to help so many by giving the gift of sight.

"Now I'm gonna get my independence back...that's gonna be a big blessing," said Bennett.
