TYLER (KYTX) - President Obama has been pushing for immigration reform before the year is up. However, he's being met with resistance from republicans in the house --who don't want to address it until next year, if at all.

CBS 19's Katiera Winfrey explains what specific issues are important to east Texans -- once lawmakers eventually tackle the matter.

The topic of immigration reform is a never-ending discussion...What to change, when to change it and whom will it affect.

"I have seen many people try to come up with a solution and I would only encourage them to continue trying and working together," said Gilbert Uriba with the Hispanic American Association in Tyler.

During a speech delivered by President Obama Monday on immigration, an audience member spoke out.

"You have a power to stop deportation for all undocumented immigrants in this country," the heckler yelled.

The president's response:  "Actually, I don't."

Urbina said for the families impacted, the wait for reform can be a lot to handle

"I can understand the young mans emotions and why he spoke that  way, it's a problem that have affected so many people and so many  families."

Everyday Urbina works with families in different areas of immigration, ranging from deportation proceedings to legalization and naturalization and other aspects of the law.

Right now, the president says for immigration reform to happen, items need to be focused on one issue at a time.

Urbina said, the most important reform topics should be on allowing skilled laborers to continue to work, and making a way to keep families together.

In the meantime, he's just happy that the conversation on immigration reform hasn't stopped.

"The problem exist and needs to be addressed. Ignoring it is not gonna make it go away," Urbina said.
