Winter weather threatens Thanksgiving travel

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - The timing could not be worse for millions of Americans trying to go home for the holidays.

A winter storm that has caused at least 11 deaths is now moving across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. There's been thousands of flight delays and cancellations and more are expected.
The mix of rain and snow is also creating slick roads.

Forecasters predict upstate New York could get as much as a foot of snow. Some holiday travelers got a head start yesterday.

"Got about 14 inches where I live so thought we better get a day earlier run on it," says one holiday traveler.

High winds could ground the balloons at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. That's only happened once in the parade's 87-year history. The rules were put in place after a balloon hit a light pole in 1997 seriously injuring a spectator.

Forecasters predict the wind gusts will exceed the limit, but parade organizers say a decision won't be made until Thanksgiving morning.
