CHEROKEE COUNTY (KYTX) - The stabbing Tuesday brings up memories of another instance at an East Texas hospital.

At ETMC in 2007, a man shot his wife multiple times, and another man in the leg.

Fortunately both victims survived.

"It went in here, hit this bone right here and traveled up my leg. They dug it out right here," says Ronnie Norton.

Ronnie Norton still has part of a bullet in his le, the bullet that shattered his ankle 6 years ago.

"I heard this loud screaming, you know. Started to look around to see what it was, within a few feet of me," says Norton.

Norton was at the East Texas Medical Center in 2007 visiting his wife, he was walking through the sliding glass doors to get lunch, when Richard White pulled a pistol and shot his wife multiple times.

"I hear sirens, hear people running, see people running. I guess I was kind of in shock," says Norton.

And Norton got caught in the crossfire.

Norton was pulled inside the hospital by a woman, then rushed to the emergency room.

A scary moment, not knowing entirely what happened.

"All my kids come in crying, told them I'd be ok," says Norton.

And family is something that's most important to Norton.

Seeing the stabbing at Good Shepherd stirred up those emotions again.

"Sometimes I think about what happened and I look at the spot where it happened and look at the spot where I fell," says Norton.

Norton says he's not scared of going to the hospital and has been back.

He's just thankful he's healthy, and only has some scars and a metal rod in his leg to show for it.

"Makes you very thankful. Bad things can happen in a matter of seconds and you can't prepare for them," says Norton.

The shooter, Richard White, was sentenced to life in prison for the shooting in 2007.
