Web Exclusive: Americans went shopping Cyber Monday; sales up

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - Americans took to their computers by the millions on Cyber Monday and went shopping. Early indications are that online sales were up more than 17% from 2012 on what was expected to be the busiest online shopping day of the year.  Mobile devices accounted for nearly a third of all online shopping.  One research firm predicts sales hit two billion dollars yesterday.

The days of tax-free online shopping in many states may soon be over.  The Supreme Court has declined to get involved in state efforts to force online retailers such as Amazon.com to collect sales tax from customers.  Even in places where the companies do not have a physical presence.  Analysts say the move will likely mean more states will attempt to collect taxes on internet sales.

Olive Garden restaurant is beefing up its menu.  The Italian chain owned by Darden restaurants will add a six ounce burger to its menu. Olive garden is trying to better compete with other sit-down dining chains like Chili's.

Fast food workers in about 100 cities across the country are expected to walk off the job Thursday. They're protesting the current federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour.  Protesters are calling for $15 dollars an hour.
