Two-time silver paralympic medalist speaks at UT Tyler

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX/ TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - Roughly 200 east Texans hear a woman's story of perseverance after a drunk driver forever changed her life.

Two-time silver paralympic medalist Kari Miller was the keynote speaker at the Mothers Against Drink Driving annual Tie One on for safety luncheon.

It was held today at UT Tyler.

Well, Ms. Williams was planning on applying to be a captain in the military when a car she was riding in was struck by a drunk driver. She was pinned to a pole, and as she was falling in and out of consciousness, her lungs collapsed and both her legs were removed to save her life.

She said it was a long struggle. After the accident she started playing basketball, a sport she was formerly one in her area at.

She worked hard and eventually tried out for the Paralympic team. She didn't make it that time but was encouraged to try volleyball.
She excelled at volleyball, but was denied a place on the Olympic team in 2004 before her team took home silver in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.

She has been named one of the top defensive volleyball players in the world.

For more on MADD and Ms. Miller's experiences, read Emily Guevara's story in tomorrow's Tyler Morning Telegraph.
