Charitable organizations asking for help stocking up on blankets, heaters

Posted: Updated:

Tyler (KYTX) -- Plunging temperatures are causing supplies at non-profits to be snatched up fast. It's becoming harder to provide even basic necessities.

"I don't think they have any blankets available today," Dewayne Parker, a recipient at St. Paul Children's Foundation, said.

Parker says he only has 2 coats to his name, which he'll layer over his clothes if it gets colder.

An average of 100 new families coming a month, St. Paul's has a waiting list for winter essentials.

"We have a list of people who need blankets, who need heaters, and we told them we'll call them if we got any in," Sharlyn Cannady, Executive Director at St. Paul's, said.

The Salvation Army in Tyler is in the same boat.

"Blankets and sheets, but we need towels. We need large towels and small towels," Chantel Millin, a spokesperson at the Salvation Army, said.

These places are asking for the community to pitch in where they can to make it a Merry Christmas for people like Parker.

"If it wasn't for the blessings of these people, we wouldn't make it. We wouldn't get by," Parker said.

You can drop off items Monday through Friday 9-5 at St. Paul's. They are accepting used blankets and coats too. If you want to donate to the Salvation Army, you can do so around the clock.
