Icy roads cause wrecks; slow down so it doesn't happen to you

SMITH COUNTY (KYTX) - All in a row, the crunched and shattered cars sit side by side at Campbell's towing company, after a day on slippery, icy roads.

Sleet, ice, and rain tested every driver on the road Friday. Some made it to their point B, but others weren't so lucky.

A black Honda came speeding off FM 2767 at 9:00 Friday morning, heading nose first into a ditch. When crews got there it was sticking straight up and down.

Then as the Jackson Heights Fire Department responded to the wreck, it's big engine also slipped off into a ditch on the other side of the road, just 50 feet away.

Responders say it's a miracle the woman driving the Honda survived without serious injury. She was taken to the hospital for a precautionary check up.

Her rescuers, needed rescuing themselves. It took firefighters hours to find a tow truck big enough to pull their engine, crippled by a  broken axle.

"It's not just limited to the public, but emergency vehicles as well," says Campbell's Towing owner Monty Campbell. He came to the firefighter's rescue.

He had already towed five vehicles before that. That included, a white Envoy whose driver ran off the road and was stuck in a ditch for an hour before EMS crews found her.

"It's just bad. You have to slow down. Even though the posted speed limit is 55 out here, we ask that people go a lot slower than that when it's raining, but even more so when it's sleeting and icing," says DPS Trooper Trevor Phillips.

It may take you longer to get where you're going but trust Trooper Phillips. It's better than ending up flipped upside down in your car.
