Speed limit reduced on Old Jacksonville Hwy in Tyler

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - The Tyler City Council Wednesday unanimously approved changing the speed limit on Old Jacksonville Highway from 55 to 50 mph.

This decision was based on the combination of traffic accident data and a speed study along FM 2493.

"Old Jacksonville Highway has seen a lot of intense development in the last several years and the speed limit needs to be adjusted to account for the additional traffic," said City Manager Mark McDaniel. "From the analysis of the study we believe reducing the speed on this road will improve driver safety."

City leaders say dozens of residents who live along Old Jacksonville had approached them about getting drivers to slow down, but it's been a long process to make the change.

"There are rules involved. We can't just go out there and decide what speed limit we want," Sam Mezayek, Dist. 1 Tyler City Councilman, said.

Not all drivers are cheering about having to slow down.

"I would rather have it at 55 so I could get to my destination faster," Mike Davis, a driver who travels on Old Jacksonville frequently, said.

The change affects the intersection of Rice road to Dueling Oaks Drive. The new speed limit will be enforced as soon as signs go up, which has to be worked out through TXDOT.
