Fire destroys century-old Gladewater area home of 9 people

Posted: Updated:

UNION GROVE (KYTX) - An Upshur County home built in 1909 was destroyed by fire Tuesday night and this morning, leaving a family of nine people, including five children, without a permanent home.

No one was injured.

Volunteers from multiple fire departments were called to the home, in the 4200 block of White Oak Road, about two miles north of George Richey Road. John Newman, who lived at the home, said fire crews spent hours dousing the flames Tuesday night, then returned early Wednesday when the floor of the structure re ignited.

The American Red Cross is assisting the family, including a three-night stay at a Gladewater inn. Newman said a Gregg County property owner stopped by and offered to let the family live in his four-bedroom rental property in Longview for up to thirty days.
