Qualified applicants sought for Tyler Animal Care Advisory Board

Posted: Updated:

Tyler (KYTX) -- The hunt for qualified pet lovers in Tyler to serve on an important board is happening as we speak.

Unwanted animals in Tyler are currently being taken to a shelter in Jacksonville. But the city is planning a new animal shelter, so an advisory board is needed and applications are being accepted.

"We have not had a city-run animal shelter for many years, so part of bringing it back is to create this advisory board," Mayor Barbara Bass said.

Tyler city council members approved creating an Animal Care Advisory Board as required by state law. It'll have 7 people on it, with at least one licensed veterinarian and one city official.

"We will try to make sure they are selected from our diverse city population," Bass said.

Bass said certain things have to check out for board members, like property taxes being paid and up to date--and preferably animal care backgrounds.

"It's exciting to get to the position we are," Bass said.

That excitement is being shared by people in the pet care community.

"We want the citizens and the animals to have this shelter, right here in our county," Deborah Dobbs, President of the SPCA of East Texas, said.

Dobbs says it's important for people who sign up for the job to know the pet population is exploding. In a feasibility study conducted by the SPCA 3 years ago, it was discovered the city of Tyler and Smith County's animal population exceeds the national average by 6 percent.

"We get calls every week from people asking what to do. The more people who can spay and neuter their pets, we would encourage," Dobbs said.

You can apply to be on the board right now on the City of Tyler's web site. Mayor Bass says selections should be made sometime in January.
