Cellphone calls on planes: Government agencies differ on rule change

The proposal to allow cell phone calls during airline flights has hit a snag.

Some members of Congress along with the Department of Transportation are stepping in to stop it before it starts.

Calls have been prohibited for 22 years over fears that they would interfere with cellular networks on the ground.

Technological advances had resolved those concerns, but the possibility of cell phones on planes hasn't settled well with some members of Congress.

In advance of today's hearing, Senators Dianne Feinstein of California and Lamar Alexander of Tennessee introduced a bill to keep cell phone users from becoming midair jabber mouths.

Their measure, the Commercial Flight Courtesy Act would limit cell phone communication to texting and email if the FCC goes through with the rule change.
