TxDot Urges Drivers to find a Sober Ride for the Holidays

TYLER (KYTX) - The TxDot Sober Sleigh is made a stop in Tyler as it continues it's 15 city Tour as it continues its 15 city tour throughout Texas. The purpose: making sure you have a designated driver.

CBS 19's Katiera Winfrey explains how the TxDot campaign is using a holiday ride to shine light on the seriousness of drinking and driving.

Rudolf is leading the way. This isn't Santa's sleigh. It's TxDot's Sober Sleigh.

Decked all in holiday paint...it carries a year long message.

"Don't drink and drive, it's just not a good idea," said Tyler driver Michelle Tyer-Heines.

"I am a true believer in everyone is responsible for their behavior, you don't ever want to put people at risk by driving under the  influence," Heines said.

She's taking the pledge and vowing to make sure she has a sober ride this holiday season.

It's drivers like her TxDot is targeting, as the agency works to cut down the yearly holiday alcohol related crashes and deaths.

Wanda Ealey is the Tyler area TxDot safety specialist, "It would be great it we could have zero fatalities this Christmas season."

During the last holiday season there were nearly 800 DWI alcohol related crashes in Texas. About 250 resulted in serious injuries, 78 turned out fatal.

"We hope something this bright this bold this will focus people on  hey maybe we do need to think about planning before we go out."

Smith County Precinct four Commissioner JoAnn Hampton is also taking the pledge.

"If you're going out as a group, just designate that person in the  group to be the driver, it's so easy," said Hampton.

She said the holidays are meant to bring people together and be a time of joy. Deciding to plan a sober ride could be the best gift you can give.

"We want to save as many lives as possible," Hampton said.
