Shipping deadlines: deliver your gifts by Christmas

Posted: Updated:

Tyler (KYTX) -- Christmas will be here before you know it, and if you want gifts delivered by December 25th, time is running out.

There are no shortage of people getting gifts on the road.

"I shipped 14 packages, and they were able to get them all in one box," Judy Parker, shipping off gifts on Tuesday in Tyler, said.

Those packages are going to her sister's family in the Panhandle.

"I went with the guarantee. It cost a little bit more, but I want to make sure they get them in time," Parker said.

After Wednesday, time is money at UPS stores, and you have fewer shipping options.

"When you start going to 2nd day and Next Day Air, you can have a quite a bit of increase in cost," Jim Hinna, co-owner of two UPS stores in Tyler, said.

Hinna says Thanksgiving falling later in the month left people with a shorter window to shop for Christmas this year.

"I think you wake up in the morning and think I better get those packages off and you realize we don't have as much time," Hinna said.

For the U.S. Postal Service, it's recommended you ship items by this Friday at regular rates to ensure Christmas delivery. You'll have to upgrade to Priority and Express Mail after that.

For all those secret Santas still waiting to send holiday cheer: "They probably need to get in ASAP," Hinna said.

National Free Shipping Day is tomorrow. Thousands of online retailers are expected to take part in offering free shipping and guaranteeing your package to its destination by Christmas Eve.
