Jacksonville toddler hospitalized after being attacked by family dog

Posted: Updated:
(JACKSONVILLE DAILY PROGRESS) - A 3-year-old Jacksonville boy remained hospitalized with severe injuries Monday after at least one of two family pet dogs bit him in the throat Sunday evening, authorities said.

The boy, whose name was not immediately available, first was taken to East Texas Medical Center-Jacksonville, then taken by helicopter ambulance to a Dallas hospital, initial reports show.

"The child is stable and being assisted with a breathing device," Jacksonville Police Chief Reece Daniel clarified Monday afternoon. "He is at Children's Hospital in Dallas and it will be a few days before they can tell how he is going to do."

The two dogs, meanwhile, were euthanized by city authorities and their remains sent to Austin for rabies testing, according to reports.

One was believed to be a black lab mix and the other a pit bull mix.

Suzi Clements-Miller, animal control officer for the JPD, said early Monday afternoon that much of the case remained under investigation.

"We haven't had a chance to speak to the parents yet, but we have left a message for them to call," she said.

The animal attack took place about 5:40 p.m. Sunday at a residence in the 1600 block of Meadow Hill in town.

Clements-Miller said the animal attack apparently happened as the child went out the door with the dogs with the family close behind.

As the dog attack commenced, the child's father was forced to stab one of them to let  him go, authorities said.
