SMITH COUNTY (KYTX) -

A jury found 33-year-old Marquel Scott guilty of murder late Tuesday afternoon in the 7th District Court.

Scott was the man who murdered 26-year-old Keeston Fields outside north Tyler's Hyena Club in November of 2012. He was also accused of shooting and wounding 33-year-old John Woods.

Smith County Assistant District Attorneys Jeff Wood and Bryan Jiral prosecuted the week-long case. They questioned Scott's claim of self defense and introduced evidence attempting to show Scott's involvement with gang activities.

Defense attorneys Buck Files and Brett Harrison introduced evidence suggesting that Woods was armed and caused Scott to fear for his life.

The final day of testimony came Tuesday and was often contentious and both sides battled over whether to let the jury know about Scott's past convictions of marijuana possession and failure to identify himself to police.

Scott's sentencing will begin Wednesday morning. He faces up to life in prison.
