State to revoke charter for Tyler area school

Posted: Updated:

(TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - A Tyler area charter school is slated to have its charter revoked after failing to meet certain standards, according to a Texas Education Agency news release.

Azleway Charter School is among six Texas schools that will have their charter revoked effective June 30, 2014.

Senate Bill 2 passed during the 83rd Legislative session requires the commissioner of education to revoke a charter if the holder fails to meet academic or financial accountability standards for the three preceding school years, according to the news release.

In addition to initiating revocation hearings, a conservator is being appointed to all six charter schools. That person will be responsible for overseeing the financial management and governance of the charter school; attending board meetings (including executive session) and directing the board as necessary to address the findings in a final report; and overseeing all close-out activities of the charter school.

All six schools received notice from the commissioner this week.

Each school can request an informal review regarding the decision to revoke. To initiate that process, the TEA must receive written notice from the school by Jan. 15, 2014.
