Shine Your Light: Salvation Army

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) -  CBS 19 and our news partners at the Tyler Morning Telegraph are "Shining the Light" on agencies that help our neighbors in need.

The campaign was started by the Tyler Morning Telegraph in 2008.

"I want to wish ya'll a Merry Christmas from the bottom of my heart," sang "Brother Ram."

A lot of people know him simply as "Brother Ram." He's a singing, bell ringing, worker with The Salvation Army in Tyler.

"I want to be able to put smiles on people.  That's important to me," said Brother Ram.

Brother Ram is doing his part to raise money for an agency that helps thousands of needy East Texans every year.

From providing emergency shelter to feeding 500 people everyday, The Salvation Army in Tyler steps in to fill a great need in our community.

"There are so many people here who go without common things, whether it's air conditioning, heating, food, maybe their ability to pay a water bill or get to and from work," said Chantel Millin with The Salvation Army.

It takes $5 million every year to keep the Salvation Army in Tyler running. The money raised from the annual kettle drive accounts for only 25 percent of the budget.

"We definitely appreciate every penny, every dollar that's been put in that kettle, because it helps insure us that when January and February comes, we're still able to operate," said Millin.

But after Christmas is over and the kettles are put up, the Salvation Army still needs your help.

"I want to be able and lift them up, too.  That's what the Salvation Army is doing to me," said Brother Ram.

Helping families and children is the focus of the Tyler Morning Telegraph's "Shine Your Light" campaign.

This year, the leaders behind the holiday giving fundraiser hope to collect $240,000.

So far, nearly $80,000 dollars has been raised.
