Robert E. Lee basketball team helps spread holiday cheer

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) -The Robert E. Lee High School basketball team is doing some good off the court. Sunday the team stood in as Santa's big helpers by giving four east Texas children, Christmas presents.

CBS 19's Katiera Winfrey spoke to players who say spreading Christmas cheer is their way of giving back to a great community.

The gifts are under the tree.

"It feels really good to just give back," said team member Jack Calhoun.

Some of Santa's biggest elves are at work.

"This is the first time we gathered to do a team effort to help a family out like this," said team member Kylar Gee.

For this event, there are no starters. Each member on the team has a pretty important job.

"I love Christmas, everyone is in such a good mood," said Gee.

They're making four children smile for Christmas.

"It was actually really fun to go out and shop for little kids," said Calhoun.

For the past week the team has been shopping for that family. Calhoun said, the Tyler community stands behind them at every game, so this is their chance to stand behind the community and give back.

"It's about representing a whole school, a whole community...this is a way to set an example" Calhoun said.

Each bike, helmet, toy and gift were bought by the team with money earned through their hard work collecting donations. All the children were able to open one gift. The rest will be saved for Christmas.

Calhoun said, "It's  really satisfying to know you gave this year and not just receiving."

Through their giving, the team showed, they can put together a miniature basketball goal,
but can also help a little princess put on her earrings.

Players say, the gifts given to the children Sunday were just a few. They said Santa told them Christmas morning the children will find more gifts under the tree.
