(CBS) -  About the only way to describe the nation's weather heading into this Christmas holiday is bizarre.

Sunday was the first full day of winter and it brought some wild weather as people prepare to travel for the holidays. Snow and ice knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of people from Michigan, through upstate New York to northern New England.
Major flooding killed five people in Kentucky And record high temperatures stretched from the nation's capitol to New York City where it reached 70.  In Hughes, Arkansas, the National Weather Service confirmed an EF-2 tornado destroyed three mobile homes and ripped up the roof of a barn, killing one woman and injuring several others. Severe storms also killed two people in Mississippi over the weekend.
