Late holiday shopping creates heavy traffic in Tyler

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - If you've been out last minute shopping or just out and about, chances are you were stuck in traffic. Many streets were backed up, but the busiest in Tyler was Broadway by far.

If you get frustrated in traffic, it wasn't a good day to be out. For the majority of the day from Broadway and Loop 323, traffic was stop and go then wait.

Tyler police said this shouldn't come as a shocker. Each year, there will always be those last minute shoppers.

It's a familiar equation -- people off work and school plus last minute shopping equals this -- especially on the eve of Christmas eve.

In both directions on Broadway Avenue, there was traffic.

Tyler police said it can be very frustrating --but drivers just have to expect delays, keep calm, and drive on.

The biggest problems are around malls and stores -- so police have placed more officers in those parking lots.

Officers say with all of the stop and go traffic, drivers need to pay very close attention.  The most common accidents are rear end crashes caused by people not paying attention, or driving too quickly.

"It's one of those things we ask people to be patient, allow yourself  that safe distance between you and the vehicle in front of you," said Tyler police department public information officer Don Martin.

If you do have to go out, police say, try to map out a new route that would take you through the back streets...there will still probably be traffic, but maybe not as much as a major road.

In addition to taking back roads, you may want to take roads that run parallel to the main one.

Although traffic was been backed up, accidents haven't gone up more than usual.

Each day officers respond to 10 accidents the number of accidents Monday didn't stray far from the norm.
