Rescue Mission: Demand for Christmas meals, gifts nearly doubles in Tyler

Posted: Updated:

LONGVIEW (KYTX) - Volunteers are meeting a growing demand for meals and gifts this Christmas, says Hiway 80 Rescue Mission Executive Director Eric Burger.

Today, nearly 300 people showed up at the Longview mission for Christmas Eve turkey, dressing. Since Saturday, Hiway 80 has served more than 1,500 East Texans with hot meals and Christmas gifts, Burger said. That includes 800 men, women and children at the Gregg County Fairgrounds on Monday.

Burger says Hiway 80 has served about as many people in Gregg County as it did during the 2012 holiday season, but he says the numbers have nearly doubled in Tyler in the past year. Hiway 80 fed about 150 homeless people Sunday, after handing out meals and gifts to about 300 men, women and children on Saturday.

Burger credits some 1,200 people who have volunteered since Saturday to meet the need, along with the mission's donors.
