Salvation Army Christmas Eve brunch gives many a taste of Christmas

TYLER (KYTX) - Less than 24 hours away from Christmas the Salvation Army held its annual free Christmas Eve Brunch.

For many people, the holiday season is the most wonderful time of the year, you spend time with your family, eat well and open presents, but that's a luxury many east Texans don't have.

Music and the aroma of good food fill the air at the Salvation Army's annual Christmas Eve Brunch."

"Not being with family , not being able to see my loved ones, that's  the most sad part," said brunch participant Michael Caldwell.

He was one of the dozens to fill the room to eat a holiday meal.

The gesture is a kind one. For people like Caldwell, it provides a little bit of holiday joy.

"It makes you know that you aren't here all by yourself and lets you  know that people do care," said Caldwell.

He has been homeless for eight months, however, for at least one day, he has a room full of family and people who care.

Christmas Eve is volunteer Murray Smith's birthday. He said, "It's not about me, it's about these folks helping hem and serving them, they don't have a family to come to."

It's a yearly tradition for him and his family to volunteer their time.

"Christmas has become give me give me give...its not about receiving. What we receive in seeing the joy we bring will last a lifetime," Smith said.

The Smiths weren't the only volunteers. Dozens of others helped, handing out dishes, desserts and drinks.

Through care and good food, s so many  have been given the gift of joy.

"There no words I can say to say thank you," Caldwell said.
