Families evacuated after Christmas morning fire

Posted: Updated:

BIG SANDY (KYTX) - A Christmas nightmare for several families in Big Sandy who lost their homes to a fire Christmas morning.

Police in Big Sandy say they got a call about smoke coming from the Shady Chateau apartments around 5 a.m. When they arrived, they saw fire, and ordered everyone out.

It started out as a typical morning for the Long family. They own a donut shop on Highway 80 and planned to be open for Christmas. Around 5 a.m. though, Chamroeun Long got a frightening phone call at work.

"My dad called my husband and I's cell phone, saying, 'Our house is on fire. There's a fire somewhere.' So, he was like, 'Get the kids out.' So, I left the donut shop and helped my dad grab my kids with me."

She says it's not how she wanted her three children to wake up on Christmas morning.

"It's really bad." says Long. "I'm really upset right now."

"It's pretty sad to happen, especially on this day." says Big Sandy Police Officer Noe De La Cruz.

He says thankfully, no one was injured in this fire, just shaken up and shocked it happened.

"They were just surprised. They were surprised and cold. It was pretty cold this morning."

"It's Christmas." says Long. "And, we're supposed to be there as a family. And, it destroyed my kids' Christmas."

The Longs were able to go back to their apartment after the fire and salvaged many of their belongings.

They say the next step is finding a new home.

"I'm a full-time mom." says Long. "It's going to be hard."

But, she's still counting her blessings this Christmas.

"I rushed there to save my kids' lives. And, luckily my dad wasn't asleep. That's one good thing out of that part."

Several fire departments helped put out the fire this morning, including Big Sandy, Hawkins, Pleasant Grove, and Pritchet fire departments.

The Big Sandy fire marshal is still investigating how it happened.
