Unexpected well interrupts family's Christmas

Posted: Updated:

Tyler (KYTX) -- A Marshall family says their holiday spirit was put to the test, after discovering something unusual underneath their house.

"I said Lynn, this is freaking me out and she's said it's a blessing you discovered it," Rita Phillips, the homeowner, said.

It happened a couple days ago, when Phillips hired someone to repair her floor, which she says had become weak.

"He come look at this, you won't believe it," Phillips said.

After a carpenter started pulling up boards, he found an open brick well in the utility room.

"He said it's probably 50 foot deep. We've been standing on this all these years, and had no idea there was a well right up under our utility room," Phillips said.

Phillips says all the moisture caused her floor to rot, and the thought about what may have been, has kept her awake at night.

"It's scary, because I'm a granny now and my grandbabies come to get things out the dryer. It could've happened right here," Phillips said.

She says some of her family flew in from Virginia, all to see this eyesore.

"My brother is coming home, and there's an open well in his sister's house. It puts a damper in my plans, I didn't plan on Christmas being like this," Phillips said.

Phillips said the carpenter is going to do the best he can to make it safe, but eventually she wants to cover the hole with cement, so there's no chance of anyone falling in.

For now, they are going to avoid the area, and focus on the Christmas traditions they hold dear.
