A Pat on the Back

KILGORE (KYTX) - An inexpensive piece of metal. But it carries value that goes beyond dollars and cents. These dog tags are given to Kilgore employees to encourage a different kind of work.

"We have core values here. Respect. compassion, integrity, professionalism, compassion, and accountability."

Kilgore Police Chief Todd Hunter says these dog tags are given to those in his department who exhibit those traits.

"You always want to recognize the good behavior, and reinforce that it is good behavior."

Hunter started giving these dog tags out 3 years ago.

"Just a couple of weeks ago our officers picked up an elderly couple that
was stranded on the side of the road. Not only did they get them help, but
they took there groceries in and took them home"

He gives a set of tags out each week.

"On the front it has our values, and on the back it has the bible verse
Josua 1:9 'I will be strong and courageous, I will not be terrified or
discouraged. For the lord my God is with me wherever I go'"

Not only can officers receive the award but so can dispatchers, receptionists and others.
It's a way to go beyond the call of duty.
