Business News: Lawmaker urges UPS to refund customers

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - A Connecticut lawmaker wants UPS to refund customers whose packages didn't arrive on time for Christmas.

A system overload this holiday season caused thousands of UPS packages to be delayed.

Senator Richard Bloomenthal says people who didn't receive their gifts in time, should get their money back for being left quote "empty handed".

A UPS spokesperson says that while refunds are standard for delayed packages, the company suspended the policy for items shipped after December 10th.

Poor weather and a shortened holiday shopping season were to blame.

(CNN) - Federal unemployment benefits end tomorrow for 1.3 million jobless Americans.

The checks will stop coming after a program signed into law back in 2008 expires Saturday.

An additional 850,000 workers will also lose state unemployment benefits over the next three months.

Congress extended or expanded the Federal aid to the long-term jobless 11 times, but an extra lifeline wasn't included in the latest budget deal.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers has proposed a short-term extension for three months.

That will make it to the floor of the senate, but not until congress returns to work next month.

(CBS) - Meantime, prospective home buyers are bracing for the stricter new federal mortgage rules which take effect next month.

Starting January 10th, lenders are required to review 8 types of financial information about a borrower to better evaluate income and debts.
