67 year-old arrested in Texarkana daycare abuse investigation

Posted: Updated:

TEXARKANA (KTBS) - A week-long investigation into alleged child abuse at Opportunities Inc. in Texarakana, Texas has ended with the arrest of a 67 year-old woman.

Police say Virginia Smith was arrested and charged with Injury to a Child, Elderly or Disabled Individual. Smith was a long-time employee of the business who was assigned to care for young children with a wide variety of developmental disabilities.

Back on December 18, the mother of a 4 year-old boy noticed bruising on the top of her son's head. After visiting a local health care facility, the police were notified. The investigation revealed that while the child was under the care of Smith at Opportunities Inc., he received numerous blows to his head and body with what was believed to be a shoe.

Based on this information, a warrant for Injury to a Child, Elderly or Disabled Individual was issued for Smith. On Thursday, December 26, Smith was arrested at her residence. She was booked into the Bi-State Justice Center. Her bond is set at $10,000.

According to investigators, it is possible that more arrests could be made as the investigation continues.
