Police urge caution as New Year's celebrations approach

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - With the new year three full days away from the start of the new year, police say there's three important things to keep in mind as you celebrate.

Each year revelers hit the streets to bring in the new year, some with a toast, some with a bang.

"We want everyone to have a good new year, but we don't want them to  have to get arrested for it," said Tyler Police Public Information Officer Don Martin.

He said, the top three issues concerning officers during new years celebrations are drinking while driving, celebratory gun fire and illegal fireworks.

"We do have costumers that are a little bit unsure," said Crazy Bang Fireworks shop owner Mike Jennings in reference to what's legal when it comes to letting off fireworks.

"Most of the time the artillery shells are the ones people like to buy , they go higher they make the biggest bang."

Before you light up, police advice revelers to make sure they're not in city limits, and if they're  in the county to have permission to be there.

When it comes to celebratory gun fire, the idea is simple: just don't do it.

Martin said, "We remind them that it is against the law, it's dangerous and we will enforce it."

He said, a bullet shot into the air has to come down somewhere.

"It would be terrible that it would come into a  house or someone walking down the street and got hit by a stray bullet  that fell from the air and it could actually kill him," said Martin.

The third and most commonly abused, infraction during the holiday season is drinking while driving. The Texas Department of Transportation statistic show last year between December 1 and January 1, driving while intoxicated, accidents, and fatalities were up 20 percent higher than the previous year.

"Don't get behind the wheel and drive, we don't want to see someone  hurt it's tragic that you can get out there and ruin your life."
