Reported flu cases up in Texas, heaviest among infants, toddlers

LONGVIEW (KYTX) - Reported flu cases are up 5 percent this week.

Representatives with the Texas Department of State Health Services say the number of babies and toddlers with the illness increased 28 percent -- in a one-week period.

State health providers in every corner of the state report heavy numbers of patients this winter.  Many bring their sniffles, fever, aches and other flu-like symptoms to health clinics and emergency rooms.

Hundreds of patients each day enter Longview Regional Medical Center's urgent care centers with flu-like symptoms.

"We are seeing max capacity at our urgent care facility," said hospital spokesperson Libby Bryson. She says doctors at the hospital have diagnosed about 100 people with the flu since October.
