"Miracle on the Hudson" - 5 years ago today

Posted: Updated:

(CNN) -  Five years ago today, a plane crash that could have been an unimaginable disaster -- instead became known as the "Miracle on the Hudson".

On January 15th, 2009, U.S. Airways flight 1549 landed in the Hudson River. The plane went down shortly after leaving Laguardia aAirport. It flew into a flock of geese that damaged both engines. Flight 1549's flight crew -- led by Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger -- safely landed the crippled airbus A320 in New York's frigid Hudson River.

Incredibly, all 155 passengers and crew made it off the plane alive -- and most avoided serious injury. The crew members were hailed as heroes for their efforts. Sullenberger retired a short time later and is now an author and aviation consultant for CBS News.

As for the plane -- it is now on permanent display at a museum in Charlotte.
