Supporters stand behind new "Kari's Law" symbol

Posted: Updated:

Longview (KYTX) -- The movement to honor an East Texas woman's memory and prevent other tragedies now has a symbol to stand behind. It's a story that's gone global.

"I never dreamed that it would go this far," Henry "Hank" Hunt, the father of Kari Dunn, said.

Dunn was the mother stabbed to death in a Marshall motel room last month. Her kids were nearby. He tells CBS19 some days are better than others.

"I think I'm probably experiencing the worst part of it. I was pretty close to her, and it's been pretty difficult," Hunt said.

His online petition for Kari's Law is up to nearly half a million signatures from around the world. He's teamed up with graphic designer Ricardo Martinez to create a symbol for the campaign. It wants you to update phone systems at hotels and motels so you don't have to dial 9 first, to reach an outside line.

Earlier this week, the FCC announced an investigation into the issue. On Tuesday night, Hunt received a personal call from an FCC commissioner.

"He sent letters to the top 10 hotel corporations in America, and is requesting their procedures for dialing 911," Hunt said.

Despite all the publicity, Hunt says there is still a way to go.

"I stayed at a hotel room Monday night, and there were no instructions at all--none-- on how to dial 911," Hunt said.

Right now Kari's three children are in the care of relatives and coping with the loss of their mom.

Kari's estranged husband, Brad Dunn, is being charged with her murder.
