Smith Co. suspect behind bars for robbery, aggravated assault

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) - Investigators Wednesday night began questioning an armed robbery suspect finally in custody in Smith County after a short manhunt.

The man is wanted in the robberies of a Walmart and Family Dollar Store. We've learned he's also wanted for aggravated assault after allegedly shooting at someone Tuesday.

CBS19 has exclusive video of Adam Bowers being taken into the Smith County Sheriff's Office Wednesday night.

Around 7:30 Wednesday night, deputies brought 34-year-old Adam Heath Bowers to the Smith County Sheriff's Office.

They caught him in the woods in Smith County just a half hour before.

"One of the ones that caught him was one of the K-9 units and he was laying face down in the woods trying to hide."

Sheriff Larry Smith says the sheriff's office got a warrant for Bowers for aggravated assault Tuesday morning after Bowers reportedly shot at someone. That was on Highway 64 near the airport.

The sheriff's office set up surveillance and Wednesday around 5:45 p.m. investigators got a big break.

"When one of our surveillance units noticed Adam Bowers walking into the woods at a fast rate of speed and at that time we set up a perimeter. "

A DPS helicopter finally spotted him with infrared technology. Several agencies joined in the search they say was worth to find the armed and dangerous suspect.

This video from the Lindale Walmart robbery around 5 Monday morning shows the man Lindale Police believe to be Bowers.

Two other suspects in the surveillance video still haven't been found.

Just hours after that robbery, Tyler Police believe Bowers robbed this Family Dollar store on Frankston highway.

Bowers was also arrested in 2002 and served time for another aggravated robbery in Irving.

"We do take quite a bit of caution when we're looking for somebody like that."

At this point Lindale Police still have not released the names of the other two suspects in the Walmart robbery.

They're not sure exactly what role they played. Sheriff Smith says bonds for the two aggravated robbery charges and the aggravated assault charge will likely total 300,000 dollars.
