Waco Police Write Nearly 100 Tickets in One Day

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) – On Thursday, in just five hours Waco Police wrote 97 traffic violations at three major intersections known for accidents. It's an ongoing effort of more police presence since revamping and expanding their traffic department at the beginning of the year.

As a unique way to include the public on their efforts to curb traffic violations, Sergeant Patrick Swanton with Waco PD tagged along with the traffic division, tweeting and Facebooking their locations and traffic stops and violations as they happened.

Through out the day the officers set up at three locations: New Road and Franklin, Waco Drive and Lake Air, and New Road and Waco Drive. Swanton says within the first three hours at the first two intersections, they wrote nearly 40 citations.

At the end of the day the totals came to 68 stops, 97 violations, 4 vehicle impounds and 5 arrests. One of those arrested included a woman who had $11,000 worth of unpaid fines. Most of the vehicle tows were because the driver didn't have insurance, and the majority of the violations were a result of red light runners.

"This is almost of epidemic proportions the amount of people we have violating traffic laws," Swanton said. "It's an issue, it's costing our citizens lives, costing injuries… and we want to see what we can do to get that stopped."

Swanton says last year alone Waco had 16 fatal accidents, and six of those were caused by drivers running red lights, stop signs or failing to yield the right of way. Since 2008 they've had 114 deadly accidents.

"We're not setting up speed traps or red light traps. We want you to know we're here, we are going to enforce traffic laws if necessary, but we would much rather our citizens drive safely and make it a choice of their own to do so," he said.

Swanton says the Police Department got an overwhelming positive response from the public on their tweeting and Facebooking, and he plans to do it again soon to highlight the problem areas and where drivers should pay attention.
