Animal adoptions suspended at Longview shelter

Posted: Updated:

LONGVIEW (KYTX) - Adoptions are temporarily halted at the Humane Society of Northeast Texas animal shelter in Longview.

According to a media release from HSNTX Executive Director Scott Holloway, an upper respiratory virus in the shelter's canine population is in the Gregg County area. HSNTX has quarantined animals now living at the shelter for observation, and has suspended adoptions until it ensures that its animals are healthy.

At sudden onset, dogs with this upper respiratory virus will show nasal signs, including discharge from the eyes and nose, sneezing and coughing. The virus can rapidly progress into high fever, and even death, shortly after seeing the first signs of the illness.

In his media release, Holloway says, "Although we will allow animal surrenders from the public, we will discourage them until the current threat is eliminated. We have isolated our current residents and arranged for clean and sanitized accommodations for incoming animals; however, we are dealing with a virus that can transmit airborne. Animal Control services will continue through their municipalities, and we will do all we can within reason to keep those dogs healthy."

It is not known at this time whether the quarantine will affect an adoption event scheduled Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Center. Last week, Holloway said there were about 140 animals housed in the shelter.
