Hiway 80 Rescue Mission breaks ground on $900,000 expansion

LONGVIEW (KYTX) - An East Texas women and children's shelter says it needs more space, so today, it broke ground on an project.

Hiway 80 Rescue Mission Ministries kicked off its a capital campaign for an expansion project at the Mission's Women & Families Shelter with a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday morning.

The $900,000 expansion project includes the addition of six family cottages, which will provide women staying at the Shelter with their children private and separate living quarters from women without children.

This separation and privacy is especially important in the case of teenage boys living with their mothers at the Shelter.  Additionally, women with children typically need to stay longer at the Shelter in order to successfully gain independence and the ability to support their families, and the cottages will allow more space for their families, as opposed to the current single rooms with bunk beds and with the restroom down the hall.

Currently a 50-bed shelter with 10 temporary beds that sleeps on average 60-70 women and children a night, the women's shelter project will double the number of the available beds as well as add office space for the Shelter staff to meet with clients.
