KILGORE (KYTX) -

East Texas is home to a one-of-a-kind program that lets students see what happens to the plastic bags they recycle.

All year long Kilgore ISD encourages children to bring what they call "BOBs" to school. B-O-B stands for bags of bags. On Thursday they got to see what happens to them.

"They come and be recycled for new bags for other people and they don't go to a landfill because landfills don't like that," student Halie Hanks said.

Pak-Sher, a local recycling company with international distribution to major customers like Chick-Fil-A, makes special bags for Kilgore retailers entirely from the students' bags. The point of the program is that it's an easy to understand closed loop of recycling that stays in the community.

"We believe that plastic bag recycling is the key to our litter problem," Pak-Sher's Michele Talucci said. "So we wanted to get the kids involved, get them recycling and build some community togetherness."

"They are a tremendous community partner and community employer," the Kilgore Economic Development Council's Jana Russell said.

Pak-Sher is hoping to expand its student recycling program to other East Texas districts. If you're interested, contact Michele Talucci.
