ALBANY, N.Y., Feb. 4, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Albany Law School announced today that U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack will deliver the keynote address at the institution's 163rd Commencement Ceremony, to be held at Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., on May 16, 2014.

Vilsack, a 1975 graduate of Albany Law School, also served two terms as Governor of Iowa before being appointed the nation's 30th Secretary of Agriculture by President Barack Obama. He has also served in the Iowa State Senate and as the mayor of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

As Secretary of Agriculture and head of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), he oversees the fifth largest federal department with 100,000 employees. Vilsack's work involves issues related to jobs, immigration, nutrition, health care, school lunch programs and agribusiness.

Vilsack has served as chair of the first-ever White House Rural Council; he helped launch First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move initiative to improve the health and nutrition of America's children; and he helped bolster America's agricultural trade to foreign markets, among many other accomplishments.

"We are overjoyed to have such a prominent graduate deliver our keynote address," said Albany Law School President and Dean Penelope (Penny) Andrews. "Secretary Vilsack's career is a shining example of the impact someone with a law degree can achieve.  He is an exceptional role model for our graduating students."

Vilsack has visited campus several times over the past few years to speak with students and faculty, and he has also attended a number of alumni events in Washington, D.C. He received the school's Distinguished Alumni Award in 2007.
