Cooking Heart to Heart

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - The Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital of Trinity Mother Frances is teaming up with Fresh by Brookshire's to educate the community about healthy cooking.  February is Heart Month and the these two organizations are kicking it off with "Cooking Heart to Heart" classes. The goal is to encourage healthier lifestyles through nutrition.

When you think of hospital food, you might not picture citrus marinated salmon packed with Omega-3s-

"Why they're good for our heart and for our bodies is because they are an anti-inflammatory." says dietitian Lauren Clark.

"Two to four hours, it's ready to go on the grill or in a pan." says executive chef Mitch Bond.

- Or couscous tabbouleh and Greek low-fat buttermilk ranch dressing, loaded with grams of protein.

"Fifteen."

"Fifteen in that one? There you go. That's more two eggs in that one little serving of yogurt."

- Or berries with plenty of antioxidants.

But that's what's on the menu at the Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital of Trinity Mother Frances. And, the director of food services wants you to try it and learn how to cook it for yourself.

"Longevity of life." says Randy Thomas. "We want to make sure that people are able to eat healthy and make proper choices to be able to have a fruitful and a pain free life."

Thomas is hoping these classes teach people that eating clean doesn't mean giving up flavor.

"Some of the stuff, I haven't heard- the vegetables and everything. And, I'm definitely going to try it out." says Trey Rowe.

He was among a group of All Saints students sitting in the audience. He says he enjoyed the class.

"I thought it was informational. And, since I'm a clean eater, it helped me a lot with what I'm cooking."

A heart-healthy recipe that's sure to be a hit.

These "Cooking Heart to Heart" classes are free. They're offered the first Thursday of every month at the Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital at 10 a.m. You can also catch the same class on the third Thursday of every month at Fresh by Brookshire's.
