Community gathers for fundraiser run for injured firefighter

Posted: Updated:

LINDALE (KYTX) - Firefighters and people from all over Texas came to run, and support Lindale firefighter Joe Yeakley.

He continues to recover, after being badly burned when a burning home's roof collapsed on top of him.

CBS 19's Katiera Winfrey went to a special fundraiser for Yeakley- and shares why so many people are standing behind this Average Joe.

This isn't your average family fun run. It's a special run complete with firefighters in bunker gear -- what they would wear to a fire -- fully dressed and people from across the state.

And it's all for one man: Injured Lindale firefighter Joe Yeakley.

Yeakley was badly burned when he was caught under a roof that collapsed on a burning home January 17th.

Mark Wilcox is a firefighter and a member of the all firefighter motorcycle group: Brothers Keeper.

"Everybody's running out and we're running in it's in our  blood, it's something we feel we have to do, we don't' think about  the risk we think about saving the lives," said Wilcox.

Hundreds met at the Picker's Pavilion start line for the "Not Your Average Joe Community Run and Walk" fundraiser.

Since Yeakley's injury then the community support has been tremendous, donating $40,000 altogether. One hundred percent of what's raised will go to the Yeakley family.

"Without him being able to work he's unable to get the income needed to pay those bills," said Lindale Fire department public information officer.

The funds provide one less thing for the Yeakey's to worry about.

"Just thinking about what they're going through cause it's just sudden," said Matt Boeh who lives in Lindale.

He said Yeakley did more than what was require in every aspect of life, so the community will do the same.

"He has a long  road ahead of him but he's got a bright future because everyone in Lindale and Texas is gonna take care of him," Boeh said.

The next opportunity to show your support will be on February 13, 2014.  This event is now a wide spread "Give Back Night" by over 40 Chili's restaurants around the state and even as far as Rhode Island, Florida and Indiana.

For more information on this, as well as many other events, please visit the Lindale Fire Department Facebook page.
