Marshall Celebrates Black History Month

MARSHALL (KYTX)  - The city of Marshall piled into the Marshall Conventions Bureau to celebrate Black History Month. The 8th annual celebration commemorates current African American leaders.  A choir sings to a jam packed Marshall Convention Center. Thousands of people came out to honor African American achievements in Marshall. New Marshall ISD Superintendent Marc Smith is one of six being honored and he says he thinks these awards are to give the youth watching someone to look up to.
"When you think about jobs, when you think about opportunity, and you think about success you have to have someone to model that after."
The event quickly became standing room only.  The program is produced by the Marshall Black History Month Committee who use the event to raise money for black scholarships.  Committee member Darnisha Carreathers says this night is about bringing people together.
"It's just important that we show our gratitude to the accomplishments that African Americans continue to make."
Humanitarian awards were given to religious, education, and political leaders in the area.
"I thin it's important because it's not just black history, it is American History that effects us all. And it is important to keep that alive."
For Smith, he says he hopes this celebration continues in the years to come.
"It inspires me. I know that I am being thought of by this community and it's a good feeling."
