Texas Education Agency upholds decision to revoke Azleway charter

(TYLER MORNING TELERGRAPH) - The state will continue with its plans to close Azleway Charter School after conducting an informal review regarding this decision.

The Texas Education Agency has notified six open-enrollment charter schools that the revocation process of their charters will continue, according to an agency news release.

This process was established under Senate Bill 2. The law requires mandatory revocation of a charter if the charter holder fails to meet certain academic or financial standards for the three preceding school years, according to the news release.

The state agency in December notified the six schools of the commissioner of education's decision to revoke their charters and each school submitted a request for an informal review regarding the decision, according to the news release.

The reviews were held and the decision to revoke was upheld. The revocations will be sent to the State Office of Administrative Hearings for a final hearing and that judge's decision cannot be appealed.

If upheld, the revocation will be effective on June 30 for all six campuses.

The six schools are Azleway Charter School in Tyler, American Youthworks in Austin, Honors Academy in Farmers Branch, Jamie's House Charter School in Houston and Richard Milburn Academy's suburban Houston campus.
