TxDot crews continue work as severe weather continues

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - All winter long, there's been an off an on threat of brutal and dangerous winter conditions. And with more severe weather likely into the morning tomorrow.

CBS 19's Katiera Winfrey spoke to TxDot and explains why now is the time to make sure you're prepared for road dangers before and after they happen.

In Texas, it's typically not the norm to see treacherous road conditions for long periods of time...this year, that's not the case.

TxDot crews have been working hard this winter, and based on the way the weather has been, work won't be slowing down.

In a matter of hours roads can change from dry, to wet to icy.

"You can be doing everything right and be hit by someone who  makes an error on the road," said Larry Krantz with TxDot

To combat the threat of severe winter weather, TxDot is again, on standby with dump trucks filled with sand and crews to make sure --as best they can-- the roads stay  clear of ice.

"It's certainly been a wetter winter than we're used to...every couple of weeks we've had to stop what we're doing and  go to Dallas or go to Houston to help our TxDot neighbors," Krantz said.

"The other drivers I'm perfectly fine."

Kindra and Justin Mount say, when weather is severe, they do all they can to make sure they are doing their part by driving cautiously.

"It scares me more when there's people out here driving how they know they shouldn't be," Justin said.

Krantz said everyone isn't going to stay off the road...so there's some safety measures to keep in mind.

Instead of following the two second follow rule, practice a 7-8 second rule.

Also, just because a speed is posted...at any given time, road conditions could make that a dangerous speed to travel...

When it comes to slipping on ice, slamming on the break is the worst thing you can do.

Krantz said if you find yourself slipping on the ice, gradually hit your breaks and which ever direction you're sliding...turn in the same direction to straighten out your car.

Justin says he  has a simple solution for icy roads, "If I get out on the road and I start slipping and sliding I'm not going anywhere I'll turn around and go home."
