Titus County Commissioners Decide to Open Portion of New Loop

MOUNT PLEASANT (KYTX) -  A county loop that's been under construction since 2011 has caused headaches for some local businesses. Owners say these construction barrels in front of their stores confuses customers and ends up costing them. Titus County Judge Brian Lee says the businesses will get a small amount of relief.

"They have been seriously, negatively impacted for well over a year."
The loop was expected to be finished over the summer, but this overpass above these railroad tracks is 15 inches too low. The beams must taken off, the columns raised, and then the beams put back on. A process that could take an extra year.
"I used to own one of the restaurants in that area. I know that they are in the red, and for them to stay around we gotta help them out."
Titus County Commissioners unanimously voted to open  the portion of the loop that will intersect with Highway 271-49 on the northwest corner of town.  Judge Lee says a crew is headed to Mount Pleasant to fix the 15 inch mistake.
"It's a huge job. You are talking about moving a massive crane, a lot of workers, and a lot of equipment. But we will begin work in the next few days."
The intersection is expected to be open by next month.
Once the entire loop is finished and opened the bill of maintenance and repairs will fall on TxDot. Until then, the bill of the newly opened portion will fall on Titus County. The county must tear down barricades, and construct a turning lane before the finished portion is opened.
