New spay and neuter clinic aims to address animal overpopulation

Tyler (KYTX) -- There's a breakthrough in the battle to get a grip on Smith County's growing number of homeless animals.

A new spay and neuter clinic at 3405 NNE Loop 323 called The SNIPPET Clinic is officially opening its doors for business.

Some people who live outside Tyler and in Smith County say it's coming at a good time.

"When I first moved here, I had no idea about the issue. It is horrible and it is an awareness issue," Pat Caldwell said.

Caldwell has made it her mission to spay or neuter her own pets and any that she's come across in the county--which she says are too many.

"I'm not trying to blow up a problem that isn't there. It's a very real problem. And I have harped on this and harped, and I will continue," Caldwell said.

It's a goal of the SPCA of East Texas to cut down on the animal overpopulation issue, and ultimately, euthanizations.

"We have major functions going on right now. Adoption, rescue, and spay or neuter," Deborah Dobbs, President of SPCA East Texas, said.

Dobbs explains she didn't want cost to be the reason why people didn't bring in their pets for the procedure.

"With this assistance program, we're able to offer it now to families in the community that would like to get it done, they just simply couldn't do it," Dobbs said.

Dobbs says Petsmart played a huge role in making this happen, giving grants totaling almost $100,000 for state-of-the-art equipment and training.

All you need to do is call to schedule an appointment during normal business hours. And there is special pricing for the zip code 75702, the area with the highest number of stray animals.
