More snow blankets Northeast overnight

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - It's a messy morning across much of the eastern United States. Another round of snow blankets the area overnight. This comes after a storm Thursday dumped up to a foot of powder from Virginia to New England.

From Baltimore to the Big Apple, more overnight snow made driving difficult along the East Coast. Drivers spent hours stuck in traffic.  On top of that, more than a million homes and businesses lost power.

Thursday's sloppy mix of snow and ice grounded more than 6,000 flights, closed schools, and much of the nation's capital. But not New York City.  Mayor Bill de Blasio defended the decision in the face of complaints from parents and teachers.

"So many families depend on those schools as a place for their kids to be during the day."

The Teacher's Union, though, disagrees with the mayor, calling it a mistake to open school in these conditions. Another wave of snow could hit the Northeast tomorrow, but the forecast calls for a big warmup by the middle of next week.
