Fire destroys businesses in downtown Pittsburg

UPDATE: Buildings nearly a century old, and a part of the national registry of historic places in Pittsburg have burned down. Fire investigators are still trying to pin the cause of the fire but business owners and city leaders say they are going to try to rebuild. CBS 19's Kevin Boyce shows us how downtown Pittsburg is planning to recover. Early estimates on damages are at least half a million dollars. But for one business owner, it hurts more than just his wallet. A business he has owned for nearly a decade, terry Colvin says he saw years of work disappear in minutes.

"You come in and do this for 9 years, and you sit in the car and watch it burn up in an hour... what do you do? I thought, this is going to test my character."
He owns The Computer Emporium that was next door to this store that caught fire early Sunday morning. The fire spread through the attic and left both buildings unusable. Pittsburg City Manager Clint Hardeman says the entire downtown district is on the National Registry of Historic Places, and losing these 2 pieces is heartbreaking.
"We are saddened by the outcome. It rips our historic heritage out form underneath us."
He says because of the historic status,  the city can apply for a grant  from the Texas Historic Commission that will help the city rebuild. The grant will pay for a historical structure engineer that will help rebuild the buildings to look like they once were.
"Our hope is that they will be rebuilt in the same way."
For Colvin he moved what he had left out of his building just around the corner.
"Why is it important to breathe? it's just what I do"
He says losing his building is one thing, but losing his livelihood is another.
City leaders are expected to meet with the Texas Historical Commission tomorrow, to learn how to apply for these grants.

That's how the fire then spread to an adjacent hair salon, destroying both buildings. The chief says several other buildings will have smoke damage from the fire.

Mount Pleasant, North Texas and Gilmer Fire Departments all assisted fight the fire.

There is no determination on the cause of the fire at this time.
