Marshall ISD Ends Competitive Football for 7th Graders

Posted: Updated:

MARSHALL (KYTX) - The Administration hasn't done away with the 7th grade football program, instead the 7th graders will be in  a year long practice. Every  day after school, parents line up to pick up their sons from football practice. Bob Garcia's grandson played 7th grade football just last year and he says he thinks the school's administration made the right call.

"It was very entertaining to watch, but with what we know about concussions today, I think it's a good idea to let them grow for an extra year."
Marshall ISD becomes the 3rd school in District 14-4a to drop 7th grade football. Texas High in Texarkana, and Sulphur Springs IDD have already done so.  Public Relations Officer David Weaver says it's simply to give each child a fair shot.
"At that particular age, some kids might be further along in their body's changes. So this gives them an extra year to develop."
He says it also helps the coaches.
"This will allow the coaches to get in there and teach some fundamentals, get them in the weight room, and teach them proper technique. So by the time they are in the 8th grade they will be ready to play real football."
"I think they will gain confidence by knowing the correct way of doing things. It will also establish a better relationship with players and coaches."
The football program is the only sport affected. The year long practice will feature a flag football league between 7th grade students. It's an attempt to teach the skills of football, without the contact.
